Examination format
Examinations test your knowledge of the study material, generally under formal closed book conditions. Exams can also be open book or online. For more specific information and requirements, refer to the individual subject/module outlines under courses offered.
Closed book
No external sources of information may be accessed during the exam.
Open book
Some subjects have open-book exams in which students are allowed to bring in specifically listed materials for use during the exam. Further details of the materials permitted are provided in the relevant Subject Room.
Online
Online examinations are delivered online through Finsia's Online Learning Centre. To take the examination, you must have access to a PC that has both JavaScript and Java enabled in the browser and an Internet connection. You will be issued with detailed information regarding the examination at the time of your enrolment.
If you do not have access to the necessary technology, you will need to make application to your Regional Office for alternative arrangements to be made for you to take the examination.
Multiple Choice
- usually have many questions to answer
- questions may be out of sequence compared to the learning materials
- terms and ideas may be reworded in colloquial or technical language or through examples or analogies
- often more than just recognition of basic ideas but also recognition of the answer to a reasoned problem. Your reasoning must make use of the learning from the course. You may have to do more than simply remembering and repeating information and may need to make an analogy or to solve a novel problem.
Short Answers
- could range from one word to a phrase, to a sentence or a paragraph
- focus on ability to recall specific information
- need careful analysis of the question in order to deliver the targeted information.
Examination locations

Sitting Online Exams

The examination is delivered online through Finsia's Online Learning Centre. To take the examination, you must have access to a PC that has both JavaScript and Java enabled in the browser and an Internet connection. You will be issued with detailed information regarding the examination at the time of your enrolment.

Sitting your exam remotely
If you are a distance education student outside these cities, you will need to complete and submit an Independent Supervisor form at least one month prior to the examination date. Please refer to specific exam procedures for studying by distance education.
What you should bring to the examination
Personal ID: Upon enrolment all new students will be issued with a personal ID number and a password. Both are required to access restricted content on the Finsia website, including relevant Subject Rooms and assessment results. You will also be required to bring your drivers' license or another form of formal identification.
Bar Codes: A bar code sheet will be included with the enrolment confirmation package sent to students. Please ensure that you attach bar code labels as indicated to each assessment item (assignment and examination) that you complete.
Specified materials for open book exams: If your exam is open book you will be permitted to bring some materials in with you. Check these details in the Subject Room.
Calculators: For some exams, students will require a calculator that has, as a minimum, the ability to raise numbers to a power (a yx or xy button). As some modules and subjects also require processing of numbers to eight decimal places, a financial calculator may be required. Please check the requirements for your module or subject before purchasing a financial calculator.

Foreign language Dictionaries: If your first language is not English you may use a standard foreign language translation dictionary in a closed-book examination, under the following conditions:
- You must apply in writing to Finsia for special permission at least one week prior to the examination. You may be contacted for an interview to assess the request.
- You may only use a standard foreign language translation dictionary (one that does not include definitions).
- The dictionary must be handed in for checking at the Finsia's office or to the examination supervisor at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled examination.
- The dictionary must be a clean copy without markings or notes. The dictionary will be returned to you at the commencement of the examination.

You will be required to bring your Personal ID and your drivers' license or another form of formal identification that includes your photo.
Final results
Student exam results and study history can be accessed online by logging in to My Studies can now be viewed online. This area is password protected. You will need your personal ID and password.
In determining the overall module or subject result, all marks (for assignment(s), examination(s) and/or participation) are combined to give a final grade.
Final ratified results are released with the final grade. Final results are posted to students and are also available on the Finsia website approximately five weeks after the end of the examination period. You will need your personal ID number and password to access your results. For reasons of confidentiality, assessment results cannot be given over the telephone.

Special consideration

You may apply for special consideration if, through events such as illness, bereavement or personal trauma, you are prevented from completing an assessment or sitting an examination, or you feel your performance has been affected by the event.

Applications for special consideration must be made in writing to Finsia's Regional Office, accompanied by a medical certificate or other documentary evidence.

If your application is successful, you may be offered the opportunity to sit another exam or have your mark adjusted.

Where an adjustment is made to the final grade, the new grade will not be higher than a pass.

You must advise Finsia of your circumstances before the due date for any assignment or examination date.

Work pressures and other personal or business commitments will not be accepted as valid reasons for special consideration.
